The University of the Free State has developed a free cellphone app and videos to support informal micro-enterprises and township small businesses.

The Good Money Habits App contains 15 short (3-5 minute) lively cellphone-based videos on practical, day-to-day money management for informal businesses and township micro-enterprises in townships, villages and rural areas. They were specially created to address the skills needs in that business context.

The videos help owners/managers to see the business finances better, not mix money, manage better, access banking services and loans, grow and create jobs. It is an attractive visual package: punchy, in plain language, no complex jargon, and very accessible. The videos use animations, lively graphics, enactments in shops, on-site filming in townships, cashbook writing demos, and a persuasive UFS student narrator called Sammy.

The app and videos are part of a research project at the Centre for Development Support on effective measures to support the informal sector. They were produced in partnership with the Interdisciplinary Centre for Digital Futures (ICDF) and the Video Lab in BLISS.

The app is available for free from the Google Play Store
