Landscapes of peripheral and displaced urbanism

This research report explores the peripheral and historically displaced areas in the northern part of the Gauteng City-Region (GCR), both within and beyond the Gauteng province. It examines how these areas, shaped by historical labour migration and apartheid-era displacement, have evolved over time, focusing on their demographic shifts, commuting patterns, and emerging local economies. Some regions have developed significant economic roles, such as mining, while others remain economically marginalised. The report also investigates government planning efforts and how these align with or are challenged by local dynamics. Using a ‘landscape’ study approach that combines empirical case studies with theoretical analysis, the report seeks to understand the broader urban processes shaping this region.
