The Department of Human Settlements invites the public and all interested stakeholders to submit written comments on the proposed Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Amendment Bill, 2022 (PDF, 696.70 KB). The Bill seeks to amend the PIE Act to curb bad‑faith and orchestrated land invasions while preserving constitutional protections and the right of access to housing. It proposes limiting the application of PIE in specific circumstances, introducing penalties for those who incite unlawful land invasions, and providing clearer guidance to courts on alternative accommodation obligations.

Key submission details are as follows:

  • Deadline – 15 June 2026;
  • Email – PIE.AmendmentBill@dhs.gov.za;
  • Hand delivery – 240 Justice Mohammed Street, Sunnyside, Pretoria, 0001 (Attention: Ms Lisa Masilo);
  • Postal address – The Director, Department of Human Settlements, Private Bag X644, Pretoria, 0001

The official notice is available via the Department of Human Settlements here (PDF, 105.76 KB), and the draft Bill can be accessed at here (PDF, 696.70 KB).
