Smart Cities in South Africa
Unlocking the Future of Township Economies
This article argues that smart city development in South Africa can play a transformative role in revitalising township economies by using digital technologies, data-driven governance and improved service delivery to address long‑standing inequalities caused by apartheid spatial planning. It explains that smart cities are not just about advanced technology but about creating inclusive, citizen‑centred urban ecosystems where ICT, community networks and responsive institutions work together to enhance quality of life. The author highlights the contrast between under‑resourced, densely populated townships and affluent urban suburbs, noting that despite these disparities, townships remain vibrant hubs of informal economic activity. By integrating township businesses such as spaza shops, salons, and street vendors into smart city frameworks through digital tools, improved mobility, and tailored municipal support, there is potential to unlock significant economic growth and close socio‑spatial divides. The piece ultimately calls on South Africans to embrace this opportunity to drive meaningful and inclusive transformation.
