Guide/ Handbook

Africa

This guide explains the rights of informal traders working in eThekwini’s retail markets (PDF, 4.80), outlining the laws and municipal policies that protect them and offering practical advice on how to engage constructively with the eThekwini Municipality and its officials. Developed collaboratively with informal traders and informed by their lived experiences, it aims to raise awareness so traders can better understand and defend their rights. The guide covers how to register as an informal trader, clarifies the relationship between traders and the municipality, explains the municipality’s regulatory powers over retail markets, outlines legal remedies available in cases of unfair treatment, and concludes with a list of useful contacts for further support.
