Transforming science, technology and innovation policies in Africa
Insights from Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa
This Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC) Policy Brief examines how science, technology, and innovation (STI) policies in Africa can drive inclusive and sustainable transformation, drawing insights from Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa. It highlights the need to shift from top-down policymaking toward approaches that combine policy learning, experimentation, and community participation (PDF, 104KB). Using case studies such as Ghana’s e-waste management reforms, Kenya’s mobile schools for nomadic communities, and Senegal’s Virtual University, the brief demonstrates how locally grounded, socially inclusive innovations can advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It concludes that integrating grassroots innovation, cultural context, and reflexive learning into STI policies is essential for transformative change across the continent.
