The Urban October Report 2025 by UN‑Habitat explains how cities across the world are confronting growing urban crises including conflict, climate change, displacement, and a severe global housing shortage. It argues that people‑centred smart cities are essential to responding effectively to these challenges. It shows that with more than 117 million forcibly displaced people, most now living in cities, urban areas have become the front line of crisis response, where access to adequate housing, land, and basic services is critical. The report documents Urban October 2025, including World Habitat Day and World Cities Day, highlighting global examples and recommendations that demonstrate how inclusive planning, community leadership, and digital technologies such as data, AI, and geospatial tools can help cities reduce inequality, strengthen resilience, and ensure that innovation closes gaps rather than deepening exclusion, especially for people living in informal settlements.
