This blog titled When is a place urban? Applying a new method for defining urbanization to Africa addresses the complexity of defining urban areas, exploring how different countries have varied definitions. For instance, Angola emphasises high population density and concentrated infrastructure, while Benin sets a threshold of 10,000 inhabitants. The inconsistency in definitions creates challenges for international comparisons, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, where urbanisation is expected to accelerate. The blog introduces a novel method, the "dartboard" method, applied to delineate urban areas consistently across 47 countries. The aim is to uncover essential insights into the patterns and characteristics of urbanisation in Sub-Saharan Africa.
