The AI Blueprint, developed under the Smart Africa initiative, is a framework to guide African countries in adopting and governing Artificial Intelligence (AI) for sustainable growth and development. It recognises AI as a transformative general-purpose technology with wide applications in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and meteorology. The blueprint identifies key opportunities and challenges for Africa and provides concrete policy recommendations to maximise benefits while addressing risks. To drive this effort, Smart Africa formed an AI working group of governments, private sector actors, academics, and international organisations, with South Africa leading through its flagship 4IR project. Overall, the blueprint lays the foundation for coordinated national and regional AI strategies that will position Africa to benefit from the digital transformation.
