City in Africa I: Urbanism and informality

This article introduces a special issue on urbanism and informality in African cities, highlighting how urban planning on the continent is shaped by colonial legacies, rapid urbanisation, and diverse informal systems. It argues that African urbanism is unique and cannot be addressed using traditional or imported planning models. Instead of viewing informality as a problem, the article emphasises its critical role in housing, land use, and economic activity, particularly in the face of weak planning systems and rapid population growth. The issue encourages a shift in planning approaches toward recognising, integrating, and supporting informality as a necessary part of sustainable urban development in Africa.
