This article reports on the recent MIRA Awards, held in Durban on June 30, which spotlighted the growing momentum of municipal innovation across South Africa. With "service delivery" emerging as a pivotal theme, the event celebrated municipalities that are leveraging technology to address complex challenges and improve the quality of life for their communities. Among the standout achievers was eThekwini Municipality, honoured for its strides toward Smart City status through innovative applications of digital infrastructure and service enhancements.

The MIRA Awards, now in their second year, are a collaborative initiative by the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA). They are underpinned by the Municipal Innovation Maturity Index (MIMI), a framework that assesses municipalities’ innovation capacity and readiness.
