Informal settlements have formed an essential part of Johannesburg since its inception, to some extent shaping its growth, often being displaced by formal development but reemerging elsewhere. In this chapter, we focus on the informal settlement situation within the municipal boundaries of the City of Johannesburg and review changes in informal settlements over the past decade.
