The World Bank’s Macro Poverty Outlook (MPO) is a semi-annual publication that provides detailed economic and poverty forecasts for 149 developing countries. It offers projections on key indicators such as GDP growth, inflation, fiscal balances, and poverty rates over the short to medium term, typically covering the next two to three years. The April 2025 edition highlights a concerning global slowdown, with the weakest growth trajectory since the 1960s, largely driven by trade tensions, rising debt, and limited fiscal space in low- and middle-income countries. The MPO warns that this economic stagnation is slowing or even reversing poverty reduction in many regions, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa. It urges governments to implement policy reforms that support growth, improve debt management, and strengthen resilience against external shocks.
