The 2023 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Country Report for South Africa provides a mid‑term assessment of the country’s progress toward achieving the 2030 Agenda (PDF, 6.76MB), building on the 2017 SDG Indicator Baseline Report and the 2019 SDG Country Report. It presents an overall picture of advances made since 2019, while highlighting persistent socio‑economic and environmental challenges that continue to hinder sustainable development. The report shows notable improvement in SDG data availability, with indicator coverage increasing from 64% in 2019 to over 72% in 2023, strengthening the country’s monitoring capacity. However, it also identifies ongoing gaps in geographic coverage, data timeliness, and disaggregation, particularly in relation to poverty, food security, health, inequality, and several economic, environmental, and governance goals, which constrain evidence‑based decision‑making and the acceleration of progress toward the SDGs.
