This article examines the unexpected success of informal mechanics within South Africa's burgeoning e-hailing industry. It highlights the growth of e-hailing services and the subsequent demand for vehicle maintenance and repair. Township mechanics have emerged as key beneficiaries, offering affordable and specialised services to e-hailing drivers. Despite facing challenges such as limited training and regulatory standards, these mechanics have leveraged local networks and hands-on experience to thrive. The article emphasises the need for ongoing collaboration between formal automotive industry stakeholders, government bodies, and township mechanics to sustain this positive economic development and ensure the delivery of safe and reliable services to e-hailing drivers and passengers.
