Report

Africa

This report examines the critical role of transportation in shaping economic development, social wellbeing, and environmental sustainability. It highlights that transportation systems are essential for enabling access to jobs, education, healthcare, and other essential services, as well as for facilitating the production, trade, and distribution of goods. Historically, the expansion of transportation infrastructure has been closely linked to economic growth and social progress; however, the report stresses that infrastructure expansion alone is no longer sufficient to address the complex mobility challenges of the 21st century. Contemporary problems such as increasing congestion, road crashes, local air pollution, rising energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions demand smarter, more efficient approaches.

The report underscores the need to optimise the use of existing infrastructure while promoting a wide range of mobility solutions tailored to diverse urban and rural environments. It also emphasises the transformative potential of technological innovations, such as smart mobility systems and data-driven transport solutions, which can enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Ultimately, the report argues that sustainable and smart transport is a vital ingredient for achieving inclusive economic growth, reducing poverty, and promoting shared prosperity, making it a central focus for policymakers, planners, and practitioners seeking to shape the future of mobility.
