Visioning fair transitions in African cities

This report explores how African cities can achieve equitable and climate-resilient development in the face of rapid urbanisation, climate change, growing inequality, and economic uncertainty. Drawing on a continent-wide visioning workshop, the report uses futures-thinking approaches to help urban leaders imagine and plan for alternative futures, identifying both key risks, such as climate system breakdown, limited financing, and weak multilateral cooperation, and opportunities, including innovation, local knowledge, technology, inclusive governance, and community-led action. The report argues that fair urban transitions require transformative rather than incremental change, supported by participatory planning, multilevel governance, and locally driven solutions that place social justice, resilience, and sustainability at the centre of African cities' development pathways.
