Report

Global

The World Urbanisation Prospects 2025 report provides a global assessment of how the world’s population is distributed across cities, towns and rural areas, and how these patterns have changed from 1950 to 2025, with projections to 2050. Using a harmonised method called the Degree of Urbanisation, the report analyses population trends and the physical growth of built-up land across 237 countries, offering comparable insights into the scale, speed and geography of urban change. It highlights the rapid rise in urban populations, the expansion of cities of all sizes, the growing number of megacities, and the shifting role of small and medium-sized cities in driving global urban growth. The report aims to guide policymakers, planners and researchers in understanding the implications of urbanisation for sustainable development, infrastructure needs and future planning.
