We hosted an engaging panel discussion on the evolving landscape of urban data science. The webinar explored three distinct approaches to data-driven urban planning. These were a hybrid set of platforms from the Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO); proprietary urban growth modelling platforms from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and an open-access platform called South African Cities Network Open Data Almanack (SCODA) from the South African Cities Network. Our expert panel debated the benefits, challenges, and real-world applications of each model, offering insights into how urban data was shaping smarter, more inclusive cities in South Africa.
