A joint civil society submission has been produced by Isandla Institute, with the support of several civil society partners, to tackle significant challenges in the backyard housing market. The submission focuses on four key areas of intervention: providing access to basic services for backyard residents on both public and private land, improving tenure security for both landlords and backyard residents, recognizing the right to self-build as part of the right of access to housing, and promoting safe neighborhoods through an area-based violence prevention approach.
