This report examines how climate change is affecting 12 African cities across key urban development areas (PDF, 2.6MB), including housing, informal settlements, land use, economic development, youth empowerment, health, food security, and safety. The report finds that rapid urbanisation, inadequate infrastructure, and growing informal settlements are increasing cities' vulnerability to climate risks such as flooding, heat stress, and food insecurity. It argues that building urban resilience requires integrated and inclusive approaches, including upgrading informal settlements, improving land tenure, investing in affordable climate-resilient housing, strengthening local food systems, supporting the informal economy, promoting low-carbon economic growth, and empowering young people through education and entrepreneurship. The report concludes that effective climate adaptation in African cities depends on locally led action, participatory planning, collaborative governance, and improved access to climate finance.
