The GreenBook is an online planning support system that supports climate resilient development at local authority level. It contains a range of tools and resources that demonstrate the likely impacts that climate change and urbanisation will have on South Africa’s cities and towns.

One of the key resources available on the GreenBook platform is the GreenBook MetroView. As part of the GreenBook MetroView, Climate Risk Profile Tools and Climate Action Tools are available for a select number of metropolitan municipalities. The development of profiles for other cities are being explored.

The Climate Risk Profile Tools provide a current and 2050 picture of climate change and its related impacts on three levels including municipal level, planning region level, and ward level. The Tool provides spatialised and quantified climate risk, vulnerability, and demographic evidence, and supports communication and analysis of the evidence to assist practitioners, policymakers, and decision makers to effectively inform and add value to climate change adaptation. In addition to providing a strong evidence base, spatial information on climate risk and vulnerability forms a foundation for developing a shared understanding of the potential impacts of climate change and the decisions that need to be made to respond to them. The spatialised communication of climate risks and vulnerabilities through the GreenBook MetroView can inform and prioritise adaptation for safeguarding development and for building long-term resilience.

The Climate Action Tools consists of various adaptation and mitigation actions. Each of the actions within the tool speaks to themes that relate to specific city functions that should consider climate change adaptation, mitigation, and disaster risk reduction.

This is one of four interactive tools and resources available on the GreenBook platform.
