Periodic Table of Land Tenure Issues and Solutions
The UN-Habitat Land Periodic Table is a conceptual tool developed by the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN) under UN-Habitat to categorise and visually represent the wide range of land tenure systems found globally. Inspired by the structure of the scientific periodic table, it organises tenure types based on attributes such as formality, legal recognition, ownership structure, and rights permanency. The table supports the "continuum of land rights" approach, which recognises that people hold diverse, overlapping rights to land ranging from informal to formal and that all forms of tenure should be acknowledged and supported. By making the complexity of land tenure systems more understandable, the tool assists policymakers, land professionals, and communities in developing more inclusive, equitable, and fit-for-purpose land administration frameworks.
