Decentralization poses particular and under-explored challenges regarding local governments' ability to deliver effective water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure, essential for health, well-being, and sustainable development. In this session, the hosts look at solutions and remaining challenges -- comparing different governance arrangements and managerial practices related to decentralization of WASH.
They will center our conversation on a new study that is among the first to address the management of WASH infrastructure in decentralized country contexts. The study is the result of an 18-month collaboration between the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, the International Budget Partnership, and the World Bank. Together, they have examined how municipalities in Indonesia, South Africa, and Switzerland are addressing challenges related to WASH and decentralization.
