Guide/ Handbook

Global

MY Neighbourhood is a UN‑Habitat guidebook that provides practical urban design principles for creating sustainable neighbourhoods. It helps translate global agendas such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the New Urban Agenda into concrete, local‑scale planning and design actions. Rather than prescribing fixed solutions, it offers adaptable principles that can be applied across different contexts to improve quality of life, strengthen local economies, and address challenges such as inequality, mobility, climate risk, and unplanned urban growth.

The guide is structured around five city objectives - Compact, Connected, Inclusive, Vibrant, and Resilient cities. It applies these principles across four spatial scales: neighbourhood, street, open public space, and building unit. It is designed as a checklist, assessment tool, and participatory resource for planners, governments, professionals, communities, and researchers, encouraging integrated, people‑centred, and multi‑sectoral approaches to neighbourhood planning and urban transformation.
